TransBallard: Day 4

20 May 2012

Williamsburg to Yorktown VA 21 miles (RT)

Our good friend Elaina informed me today that I am going to die. Apparently this desk-jockey life is truly going to kill me and there’s a recent scientific study to prove it. Well, clearly this is not a matter to be taken lightly. Since it’s too late for me to get off my office chair and join Gina on the TransAm, I had to think of a remedy closer to home. And then it came to me – install one of those stand-up workstations, maybe even one of those really fancy ones with the slow-moving treadmill. A little Google shopping later and I came to the second hard truth of the day – I am still going to die because I refuse to pay all that money for a set-up devoted entirely to working. Time to improvise.

No money down, no monthly payments, just move the stackable crates back to the closet when you want to sit down.

While I was busy saving my own life, Gina, who doesn’t face this dire issue of sitting for too many hours a day and certainly never will given her ADD and ever-present restless leg syndrome, was busy officially starting the TransAm. Bike tours involve many things: flat tires (luckily not hers); posing at signs so you remember 8 months later, when you are finally sorting through those hundreds of photos, where you were; people leaning in to make sure they all fit in the photo; the bicycle and rider glamor shot; and food, this time at a church with blessings for a safe ride. Let the journey home begin!
