Southern Tier: Day 30

07 April 2014
Lost Maples State Recreation Area to Kerrville, TX
53 miles (Total Miles = 1,449)

It’s running down the road in front of us, bobbing a little awkwardly from side to side, gaining speed and distance before whoosh, it takes flight and I wonder if it will actually lift, much like a loaded 747. The “it” in this case is a a wild turkey that clearly thinks we’re planning an early Thanksgiving and has no intention of being the featured dish. We’ve seen a few of these big birds now taxiing down this road and it’s comical every time.

It’s another fabulous day in Texas Hill Country, made even more fantastic by the fact that we hit the mileage-based halfway point. Actually, as I type this, I’m not convinced that that really is all that fantastic, for when I stop a moment and think about it, it’s definitely bitter-sweet.

Obviously sweet because it’s quite the accomplishment and even during the hardest of moments, it’s been a treat and a privilege to be out here doing what we’re doing with all of the great people we’re doing it with. But at the same time bitter because of course I already don’t want the adventure to end and so must remind myself to go back to being in the moment and in that halfway moment, we were celebrating our mid-point victory with hot and gooey cinnamon buns (thanks Paul!) at The Store in a little town called Hunt. And they live up to their town name – there are deer everywhere and these fine Texas folks like to hunt them. Personally, I just like to look at them and coo over how cute they are and not think about their sweet little heads mounted on somebody’s wall. But that’s probably because I’m not from around these parts. Just cycling through, halfway there.
