Southern Tier: Day 23

I’m so cozy in my Stone Village bed that I never want to get up and leave here. It’s one of those days off the bike where I don’t have to roll off the Thermarest, take down the tent, choke down breakfast, and make a PB&J sandwich before the sun has barely cleared the horizon. Instead, I can kick back and actually enjoy two cups of coffee without worrying whether or not there will be any services in the next 20 miles. It’s almost like being on vacation.

Okay, so you know the Rest Day drill: laundry, internet, blogging, blah blah blah. Today was all of that and a little bit more, which means we left our super cute room to explore the super cute town we’re staying in. There’s not much to it beyond breakfast and ice cream on the main street and a sharp looking courthouse near the end of town, but it’s quaint and has a nice vibe, resulting in a definite two thumbs up.

With our chores all done, we opted for the afternoon van excursion to the town of Marfa, about 20 miles south of here. Known for its mysterious Marfa lights, what we mostly found was that all of the lights were out – galleries, shops, hotel bars – closed, closed, closed. Oh well, at least it had a courthouse climb, offering all-encompassing views of the small town and surrounding countryside. That was worth the effort, even if we were supposed to be resting.

  1. Lets do the Marfa 100! Outside of town, they have a Prada store front set up in the middle of nowhere. It’s all art with the entire Prada collection from 2005.

  2. What a hoot! Leave it up to the computer geeks to change my website joke, e.g. you’r to young, into an actual URL! Thank heavens it doesn’t exist. I shudder to think what it “could” have been! Keep on truckin’ kids as I enjoy your blog!

  3. Whats up with the Closed Marfa? I want to go to Marfa someday – they have the Marfa 100 coming up I think. We can all join up there 🙂
