Southern Tier: Day 65

12 May 2014
Jekyll Island to St. Simons Island to Savannah, GA

Something is crawling across my bare foot in this brown water and so naturally, I scream. This prompts Gina to scream as well, drawing stares from the local sunbathers. Terri, who I have come to believe was a marine biologist in a previous life, doesn’t even flinch and instead does the unthinkable, which is to reach down into the murky water and try to capture whatever it is that was heretofore crawling across my foot. It’s a blue crab, a huge one, and by huge I mean at least 2 inches across. She’s not successful in luring this unwelcome beast from the depths, although she does manage to scoop up a smaller version that still sends Gina and I backpedaling onto the sand. I believe in my former life I was a real estate agent so picking up pinching sea creatures is definitely not in my job description.

Our scare with the big blue crab comes on the beach of St. Simons Island, a hop across the Intracoastal Waterway from Jekyll Island. Our ultimate destination today is Savannah but the only rush to getting there is to make sure we arrive before the Visitor’s Center closes at 5 pm, as we need to pick up a parking pass for our time in the city. Even fun and exciting holidays come with mundane tasks like these. On the plus side, we are treated to “Classic Hits” radio on our road trip north. It turns out that somewhere along the way of my life, many of my favorite songs have become “Classic” when they used to be “Current.” I’m not going to fret over it too much since being able to sing all of the lyrics to “It’s Still Rock’n’Roll To Me” at least means my memory’s not yet failing.

Here in Savannah we are staying at a super cute flat in a super great location from which we will start making our way around town tomorrow. If first impressions count, there will be a lot of Super Cute’s in our future.
