While dinking with iTunes tonight, I had the following thought: does it bother anyone else that we really don’t know the full story around Delta Dawn?
If you add it up, all we really have are a bunch of open-ended questions:
Delta Dawn, what’s that flower you have on?
Could it be a faded rose from days gone by?
And did I hear you say he was a-meetin’ you here today
To take you to his mansion in the sky?
Just when her story gets started …
She’s forty-one and her daddy still calls ‘er “baby”
All the folks ’round Brownsville say she’s crazy
’cause she walks downtown with her suitcase in her hand
Lookin’ for a mysterious dark-haired man
In her younger days they called her Delta Dawn
Prettiest woman you ever laid eyes on
Then a man of low degree stood by her side
Promised her he’d take her for his bride
… it abruptly ends.
Does it seem to anyone else like there’s a missing verse? Okay, so I can guess she got dumped and had some kind of breakdown, but what grounds did that guy have for dumping her? And if her daddy has a close enough relationship with her to still be calling ‘er baby, why the heck doesn’t he pull her off the streets?
I think Delta Dawn deserves some closure. Here’s how I envision the story ending:
One day she woke to find herself alone
That man was gone, the dog just had a bone
But her daddy came to save her from herself
One Powerball later she was drowning in her wealth
Delta Dawn, what’s that bling that you’ve got on?
Could it be a glittering sign that you won’t cry?
And did I hear you say your pink limo’s on its way
To take you to your mansion in the sky?
You rock, Helen. Dig the pantsuit and 70’s shag.
