Germany to Austria: Thunder Only Happens When It’s Raining

27 Aug 2011

Outside Hergatz, Germany to Fussbach, Austria (37 km)

Thunder is a really cool sound when you’re indoors, wrapped up in your fluffy duvet, contemplating that steaming cup of coffee that’s brewing in the Biker Bar downstairs.  It’s not the coolest of sounds when you think past the coffee to the next step, getting on your bicycle and pedaling to Switzerland.  So you wait it out until the downpour becomes a drizzle, don every bit of rain protection you’ve had stuffed in that front pannier for the past 12 days, and remind yourself that it’s always good to move forward.  You may not know exactly Where forward, especially when you find yourself crossing rivers and streams and canals every which way and the bike signs no longer have any obvious country affiliation to the point where when you do stop for the day, you have to ask the woman running the guest house if you’re in Switzerland (to which she replies, No, Austria), but at least you’ve made some forward progress and better yet, those Euro in your pockets are still good here.
