Germany: From Now ‘Til Then

Frankfurt

We’re sitting on the edge of the Main River watching the sun go down behind the Frankfurt skyline, drinking a pint of beer with dozens of locals, and as much as I try to stay in this moment, I can’t help but think about the past year and how the end of this cycling trip also marks the near-end of our year off.  We’ve grown so accustomed to every day being like today – we get up when we’re ready to start our day, we do what we want to do when we want to do it, and then we get up the next day and do it all over again.  Every day is like Saturday.  Take today, for example.  Up well after sunrise for breakfast, took apart and packed the bikes, ran a load of laundry and packed our duffel bags, and now sightseeing our way around Frankfurt.  All Saturday-type activities.  No one’s agenda but our own.

Okay, so we know that the reality of getting jobs again is just around the corner, that those days are coming (back) when not every moment is driven by our choosing (at least not at the microscopic level), but in the meantime I think we’ll serve ourselves best by taking and savoring every day of blissful independence between now and then.  It’s been a great ride – not just around Germany and her surrounding countries but around the world itself – and it ain’t over yet.
